Why AI answers cite directories and skip company websites

An assistant quotes the page that already contains the answer. A directory page holds a ranked comparison of several businesses, a company website holds one business saying it is good. The first can be compressed into a sentence, the second cannot, and compression is what an assistant does.

Compression is the whole mechanism

Ask an assistant for the best jeweller in a town and it retrieves perhaps five pages, then writes three sentences. Everything that survives that reduction had to earn its place by carrying information the other pages did not.

Consider what a company homepage offers under compression. Family run since 1974, master craftsmanship, personal service. Every competitor page says the same, so none of it distinguishes anyone. The model has nothing to keep. A directory page offers seven names in an order, with addresses and a reason for each. Under compression the names survive, because names are the only thing that answers the question that was asked.

The three layers a directory page gives away

A member.show directory page publishes the same seven businesses three times over, in three machine readable forms.

The answer paragraph sits at the top and states who the seven are, in a sentence built to be lifted whole. The ordered list repeats them as structured data with rank, address and contact, so a machine reads the sequence and not only the words. The question block repeats them once more inside answers to the questions people actually ask. A page that says the same true thing in three formats is far cheaper to trust than a page that says it once.

What survives when a page is compressed into three sentences
Page typeWhat it statesSurvives compression
Company homepageWe are good at thisNothing, every competitor says it
Company about pageOur history and valuesRarely, unless a fact is unique
Listing site entryName, address, categoryThe address, if it is asked for
Curated directory headSeven names in an order, with reasonsThe names and the order
The rows describe how a retrieval and summarisation step treats each page type. They are a description of the mechanism, not measured percentages.

What this means for a single business

The uncomfortable conclusion is that your own website is the weakest of your possible sources, precisely because you wrote it. It is still worth having, since it is the one source you control and the one that can be corrected in an afternoon. It just cannot carry the job alone.

It also matters which assistants you are talking about. Measured across 101,574 websites, ChatGPT carried 74.78 percent of AI referrals in 2026, Gemini 11.56 percent, Perplexity 7.23 percent, Copilot 3.51 percent and Claude 2.62 percent. Gemini grew 231 percent year on year and Claude 320 percent, while ChatGPT grew 27 percent, so the field is spreading rather than settling. Together they made up 0.32 percent of all website traffic in 2026, against 0.24 percent in 2025 and 0.02 percent in 2024.

The practical route is to appear in places that publish comparisons, then make sure those places describe you identically. Two sources that agree do more than five that differ. And the head of a comparison matters far more than a place further down, because a three sentence summary has room for the top of a list and no room for its middle.

Questions and answers

Is it enough to be listed anywhere at all?
No. A listing that carries only your name and address answers the question where you are, not the question who is good. Being in a comparison is a different kind of presence from being in an index.
Does structured data get me quoted?
It helps a machine read the page, and that is worth doing. It does not create a quote. Google states explicitly that it does not guarantee that features consuming structured data will show up. The quotable sentence has to exist in the text.
Should I stop maintaining my own website then?
No. It is your only correctable source and the destination once someone is convinced. Rewrite its first paragraph so it answers a customer question instead of welcoming visitors, and it becomes useful to a model as well.
Why does the top of the list matter so much?
Because a summary has room for a handful of names. Everything below that handful is reachable data but not quoted text. Being on page one of a directory and being in its answer paragraph are two different products.
What is the investment for a place in the answer paragraph?
250 euro a month plus VAT, six months minimum term, so 1,500 euro in total before the agreement becomes cancellable monthly. No setup fee.
